What is the best type of axe for splitting firewood?

For most firewood, a Splitting Axe (like our Roughneck range) is superior to a standard chopping axe. It features a wedge-shaped head that forces the wood grain apart, making it much more efficient for logs. If you are dealing with very large, knotted rounds, a Splitting Maul is recommended.

Do I need a full-size axe or a hatchet?

It depends on the job:

  • Hatchets: Best for one-handed use, creating kindling from smaller logs, or camping.
  • Splitting Axes: Best for two-handed use to break down larger logs into burnable sizes.
  • The Pro Tip: Most of our customers find that having one of each makes fire prep much more efficient.

How do I maintain my axe to make it last?

Keep it dry: Wipe the head after use to prevent rust.

Oil the handle: If you have a wooden handle, an occasional coat of linseed oil prevents it from becoming brittle.

Stay Sharp: You don't need a razor edge for splitting, but removing nicks with a sharpening stone ensures the wedge enters the wood cleanly.

Why do I need a chopping block for firewood?

A chopping block for firewood provides a stable surface for splitting logs safely. Using a dedicated block protects your axe blade from ground contact and ensures maximum striking force. Longer longs can also be placed across the block so they can be cut down with a saw and it will stop your saw blade blunting on the ground.

When do you deliver if we order online?

Once we have received your order, we will contact you to arrange delivery. We aim to make all our deliveries within 1-3 working days or you’re welcome to collect.

Hardwood vs Softwood logs

Hardwood is denser, burns hotter, and lasts longer — so you’ll use fewer logs. Softwood lights easily, burns brighter, and is ideal for starting fires. We recommend starting with softwood, then switching to hardwood for steady heat.

Seasoned vs Kiln Dried logs

Kiln dried logs are artificially dried to below 15% moisture, giving a hotter, cleaner burn. Our seasoned logs are stored undercover for over 12 months, averaging under 20% moisture.

How should I store my logs?

Store logs in a dry, well-ventilated space, stacked off the ground and covered on top. This keeps air flowing and your firewood ready to burn. Our log stores are the perfect solution.
